This cinematographic adaptation of a novel from Latvian classical literature sparked strong opinions on the eve of its premiere. Many disapproved its departure from the original, for instance, excessive sexuality in the relations of its two main characters. However, the outraged puritans were not great in number and the film broke all attendance records and was a leading Latvian box-office hit for more than ten years.
