ZVEJNIEKA DĒLS (FISHERMAN’S SON) directed by Varis Krūmiņš, 1957
Although everbody remembered quite well the first film version of this novel made in 1939, it was for mainly political reasons that the Riga Film Studio undertook to make a new version of the film. The main character was played by Eduards Pāvuls who was given the fisherman’s hat and boots used in the making of the first version before the war. In order to portray the actor physically more imposing, his clothing was padded and in some scenes even a ditch was dug where a two meter tall secondary actor walked alongside Pāvuls. The film, however, fell far short of the popularity captured by the prewar version. |
