NĀVES ĒNĀ (IN DEATH’S SHADOW) directed by Gunārs Piesis, 1971
All the key ingredients for suspense and action in a film that would glue the viewer to the screen are absent in this film, certainly no happy ending. It is about thirteen fishermen isolated on a piece of ice floating in the open sea for three days. That is all. But the the emotional strain of the men waiting to be rescued is maintained throughout the film keeping the audience sitting on the edge of their seats until the very end. The cast are all the Latvian theatre stars of that time. |
