Koknese castle ruins
27.08.2004 15:34
The archbishop’s stone catle was built in 1209 on the site of a former Old Latvian wooden castle. Since the castle stood on the Daugava bank it was practically unassailable therefore it stood undemolished until 1701, when Saxon troops blew it up while retreating. The castle lost a great deal of landscape after the partial flooding of the Daugavas bank, when Pļaviņas water-power plant was built.
